Both fire-tube and coil steam boilers have the same purpose: to produce “dry” saturated steam for maximum heat delivery to the consumer. Both types of boilers operate on the same basic principles, in which water is contained in a confined space and heated by burning a fuel source. The energy from combustion is transferred from the flame to the water through radiation and heat conduction, heating the water and ultimately raising the steam. However, the means of heating the water to the point of “dry” steam differ significantly.
Steam fire-tube boilers
Fire-tube steam boilers are the most traditional technology for producing saturated steam, high-pressure hot water, or superheated steam for a wide range of industries.
Steam is produced by heating a large volume of water in a pressurized drum using hot gases generated by burning liquid or gaseous fuel circulating through submerged pipes.
Coil-type steam boilers
Coil-type boilers have become the best choice for steam production, and their popularity will continue to grow; this is not surprising, given their numerous advantages. Not only are they more energy efficient, simpler, and safer to operate, but they also produce steam very quickly—from three minutes from a cold start to full power. This last aspect is important when the technological process is intermittent or starts and stops daily.
What are these boilers best suited for?
Despite the gradual shift away from steam generation technology as the most popular method of industrial process heating, there are many areas of application where steam boilers cannot be used:
Where both direct and indirect heating are required at the same time
Where heat transfer at a constant temperature and high speed is required
For heating large volumes of process hot water through stable and efficient heat transfer from steam boilers at lower temperatures.
Beer production
Steam and hot water for mashing malt, draining, boiling wort, filtering, pasteurizing, and dealcoholizing, as well as for cleaning and sterilizing bottles and kegs.
Beverage production
Hot water and steam for flash/tunnel pasteurization, distillation, sterilization, filling, and cleaning.
Dairy factories
Steam for ultra-high temperature processing, pasteurization, sterilization, heat treatment, for the production of whey, cheese, and drying of milk powder, as well as for cleaning processes, including CIP.
Oil and fat plants
Steam and hot water for processes such as pressing/extraction, desulphurisation, clarification, evaporation, as well as deodorisation, drying and solidification.
Sugar/starch production
Generating steam for processes such as heating, extraction, evaporation, and crystallization, often by combining two energy sources in the form of heat and electricity.

Heat and steam for various baking processes; roasting, tempering, and conching chocolate; processing and refining sugar mass; cleaning equipment.

Steam for pasteurization and sterilization of tin and glass containers, for example, in autoclaves. Hot water for stewing and cooking.
